Bright eyes provide a youthful and confident appearance while tired looking eyes will make one look older and less confident.

Dr. Lau has always had a passion for the eyes. He thinks that the eyes are the most important feature of the face for Asians. Bright eyes provide a youthful and confident appearance while tired looking eyes will make one look older and less confident, even if the person feels otherwise.

Eyelid surgery can be applied on the upper eyelid (upper blepharoplasty) or on the lower eyelid (lower blepharoplasty).

Upper Eyelid Surgery (Upper Blepharoplasty)

WHAT IS UPPER EYELID SURGERY?

This procedure is especially beneficial to older patients with sagging upper eyelids or even to middle-aged patients with premature upper lid droopiness.

PROCEDURE

Contrary to what most people think, this procedure is more than merely the removal the excessive eyelid skin. Dr. Lau carefully plans out aesthetically-pleasing, elegantly proportioned eyelid creases, in addition to deciding how much skin to remove. Using special suture fixation techniques that he acquired from famous cosmetic oculoplastic surgeons in Beverly Hills, Dr. Lau is able to provide clean and sharp looking lids with long lasting results. Asian eyelid surgery requires particular attention and techniques.

The upper eyelid surgery procedure takes about 2 hours to complete.

RECOVERY

The stitches will be removed 5-7 days post-operatively. Bruising usually will take 5-7 days to dissipate. Most of the soft tissue swelling will settle within the first two weeks but residual swelling can take 2-3 months to settle. After 7 to 10 days, most patients can return to normal social function, perhaps with some makeups. (the length of recovery varies among patients)

BENEFITS

Upper eyelid surgery has a distinct benefit for older patients with droopy upper eyelids. It can improve the visual field of patients impaired by the droopiness. It can also help patients with less defined eyelid creases or patients who desire to have higher eyelid creases. In patients without upper eyelid creases, such as some Asians, upper eyelid surgery can create the creases for them.

Lower Eyelid Surgery (Lower Blepharoplasty)

WHAT IS LOWER EYELID SURGERY?

Unlike upper eyelids, excessive lower eyelid skin is usually not the main reason for tired looking eyes. Protruding fat pads underneath the eyeballs form what are commonly-called lower eye bags (pseudoherniation), giving the eyes a tired, unrested look. Combined with the descent of the midface fat pad, a hollow groove (nasojugal groove) then forms between the lower eye bag and the descended midface fat pad. Lower eye bags and the groove below them are both very characteristic of an aging face.

PROCEDURE

Traditional lower eyelid surgery involves removing some lower lid skin and also the resectioning of some protruding fat pads, resulting in the effacement of the lower eye bags. In applicable cases, better results can be obtained by repositioning of the protruded fat pads to fill the nasojugal grooves. Depending on the cases, sometimes a fine, inconspicuous incision will be made very close to the lash line for the removal of excessive skin. The incision heals well usually and the scar is barely visible in most cases. The end result is the effacement of the lower eye bags, forming a smooth contour from eyelids to the midface, making the face looks more youthful.

The lower eyelid surgery procedure takes about 2 hours to complete.

RECOVERY

When effaces incisions are made, the sutures will be removed after 7 days. Bruising will usually take 5-7 days to dissipate. Most of the soft tissue swelling will settle within 7-10 days, but residual swelling can take 2-3 months to settle. After 7 to 10 days, most patients can return to normal social function, perhaps with some makeups. (the length of recovery varies among patients)

BENEFITS

Lower eyelid surgery effaces the lower eye bags, results in a smoother contour from the lower eyelid to the midface providing a youthful look and more rested appearance.
